International Auto Repair, Somerville MA Site Plan
International Auto Repair, Somerville MA

Site requires unusual coordination of automobile and pedestrian traffic. The paths that automobile and pedestrian traffic must follow intersect.

The building is to reinforce the street edge along Somerville Avenue. It does so by establishing a continuous line, flush with the sidewalk along Somerville Avenue and providing the primary building entrance here.

The second floor of this 2 story building is similarly aligned, and further complements the street edge through a continuous array of ribbon windows, which create a pattern of interest and light. The primary business entrance to the building is further articulated through an angular indentation, which as a result provides also a sheltered entryway and lending sculptural form to the building itself.

The façade material itself, a 3' module of terracotta tile is wrapped along the north façade facing Somerville Avenue, and the east façade which faces the adjacent residential lot, across a 20' driveway. These materials are consistent with surrounding building veneers and have the added advantage of allowing further articulation of the walls themselves through a variation in module textures, ranging from a smooth terra cotta finish to a series of reveal panels.
